What Size Bag Fits a 16-Inch Laptop? A Measuring Guide
Share
A "16-inch laptop" is 16 inches measured corner to corner across the screen. The bag cares about the body, which is wider. Here is how to buy a bag that actually closes.
Real dimensions of popular laptops
| Laptop | Width | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13" | 30.4 cm | 21.5 cm |
| MacBook Pro 14" | 31.3 cm | 22.1 cm |
| MacBook Air 15" | 34.0 cm | 23.8 cm |
| MacBook Pro 16" | 35.6 cm | 24.8 cm |
Windows laptops vary more, so check your model's spec sheet for width and depth.
The rule of thumb
- Your bag's laptop compartment should be at least 1 to 2 cm wider and taller than the laptop body.
- If you use a protective sleeve, add another 1 to 2 cm.
- Measure the compartment, not the outside of the bag. Handles, gussets and seams eat space.
What else fits
With a 16-inch laptop in a dedicated compartment, a good work tote should still take a charger, a tablet or notebook, a water bottle and your keys without bulging. If the bag only closes with the laptop alone, it is a laptop sleeve with ambitions.
Carry options matter more than you think
A 16-inch laptop weighs around 2 kg. Over a long commute, a bag that converts to crossbody or backpack spreads that weight better than a single shoulder strap.
The Dowry is our structured work tote with a compartment for laptops up to 16 inches, and it converts from handheld to shoulder, crossbody or backpack. It fits your laptop. It does not fit your boundaries.
